RESEARCH PROFILE
I am currently a postdoctoral researcher with the ROCIT project, focused on the consequences of the war in Ukraine for Roma in Central and Eastern Europe. As an anthropologist, my research tracks the experiences of Ukrainian Roma refugees and the activities of Roma elsewhere who mobilised to support the former in a situation of institutional racism. More broadly, I am interested in how the war-related situation changes and challenges dominant understandings of the position of Roma in predominantly non-Romani societies.
With an abiding interest in Romani Studies, my research among Roma in different European countries draws on a variety of disciplines, notably anthropology, history, and sociolinguistics. My long-term ethnographic research in eastern Slovakia focuses on everyday interethnic relations and Romani strategies of sociability. These themes are explored in my first book, Facets of a Harmony (2022). For my PhD research, I turned to the discipline of history, considering the experiences and life strategies of Roma in the context of a resettlement programme that was underway in socialist Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. My Ph.D. dissertation was published under the title Roma as Agents of the “G*psy Question” (2024).
