RESEARCH PROFILE
One of my areas of interest is border experiences in times of crises. After my fieldwork in the Czech-Slovak borderlands in 1997–1998, in 2023 I expanded the scope to include the eastern border of Slovakia and, as part of an international project team, I am carrying out ethnographic research on border experiences and symbolic negotiation of borders at the Slovak-Czech and Slovak-Ukrainian border.
For several decades, from the perspective of urban ethnology and using a historical-ethnological approach, I have been dealing with vineyard towns and the social vicissitudes of independent winegrowers as members of the middle class in agrarian towns in western Slovakia in the 20th and 21st centuries. I focus on winegrowers as actors of the post-socialist transition, on regional development, and on the creation of the branding of the vineyard towns.
My third area of interest is holidays and festivals. From the wide range of forms of festive culture in the 21st century, which in a specific way reflects the state and transformations of society, I am most interested in the current forms of “traditional” European Christian holidays (Easter) and the cyclical urban festivals which arose in the 20th century as invented traditions and exist to this day.
