PRINCIPAL RESEARCH INTERESTS

Ethnochoreology, Dance Anthropology; Interpretation of Historical Records of Dance; Dance Performativity in Historical, Ideological and Political Contexts; Dance as a Cultural Process and a Special Mode of Social Activity; New Contexts of Traditional Music and Dance Culture: Heritization, Revivalism, Festivalization, Tourism and Commodification

RESEARCH PROFILE

The focus of my interest is to trace the meaning of music and dance expression in different cultural, social, political and ideological contexts. I am concerned with the performativity of dance in its symbolic and cognitive dimensions; the purpose of this perspective is to perceive this expression as a process that only acquires meaning in contextual frames.

Ethnochoreology enables both historical and anthropological approaches, combined with the study of phenomena of human action within the framework of interactional processes, and I perceive dance primarily as a cultural text. It is seen as a cultural process and studied in the context of a live performance within the socio-cultural system of which it is a product. There is an integration of all the dimensions that define dance, and it is primarily the socio-communicative meaning of dance that imbues this process with the quality of a text. The dance text is not a mere choreographic structure, but an overall function that links certain social interactions and certain structures of dance elements in accordance with a given type of communication. In this way, dance is perceived as a social activity and becomes a key to understanding the processes involved in the formation of identities, its affective dimension contributes to the sharing of emotion or ideas.
