Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites applications for a research position in digital humanities for the four-year project OP JAK Land gone wild

The Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Republic, invites applications for a research position in digital humanities for the four-year project OP JAK Land gone wild: archaeological and transdisciplinary research of resilience strategies in 20th century. The project focuses on the research of archaeology, materiality and individual, collective and landscape memory of 20th century Czechia with a special attention given to the impact of armed conflicts, forced migrations and landscape changes associated with the Sudeten areas, collectivization of small farms, formation of the state border and the Iron Curtain, and other aspects of totalitarian regimes. The project is based on collaboration with Institute of Archaeology Prague of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Department of Archaeology of the University of Western Bohemia, and the Center for Theoretical Studies of Charles University.

Place of work: Brno (preferred), Prague
Starting date: February 1, 2025, or when possible

Expected duties:

  • development of digital humanities within the project and the Institute
  • authorship of scientific articles and other outputs
  • participation in other research activities of the Institute
  • development of own research topics

Desired qualifications:

  • Ph.D. (completed or near completion) in digital humanities, geoinformatics, geography etc.
  • competence in database and geoinformatic systems (e.g. MS Access, ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • experience with programing and web design
  • experience with the implementation of AI into social science research
  • excellent knowledge of English
  • working knowledge of Czech and German as the primary languages of research welcome
  • ability to work independently and as a team member, creative thinking
