WHY FOLKLORE? Revival in the post-socialist countries: politics, memory, heritagization, and sustainability

Daniela Stavělová at a seminar of the Institute of Ethnology, 7.10. 2024.

Abstract: The talk will address how the past and elements of vernacular culture are (re)interpreted and (re)invented in contemporary society. It is based on a bilateral Czech-Slovenian project focused on folklore activities related to music and dance, often without the intent to cultivate or disseminate further. This research starts from the premise that the folklore revival at the beginning of the 21st century is complex and takes place within a network of cultural and political tendencies. Unlike the ideologically-driven folklore movements of the 20th century, this revival is shaped by both local and global dynamics. Folklore now serves as a reflection of regional identity, while also evolving into a hybrid field of musical and dance expression that incorporates bricolage and the appropriation of deterritorialized traditions.
